Cal State San Bernardino graduate students with a passion for journalism have an opportunity to develop their reporting skills through the Laveryn Grace Schultz Fellowship. This $7,000 award will support four students in CSUSB’s M.A. in Communication Studies or M.A. in English and Writing Studies programs who are committed to investigative or community journalism in the Inland Empire.
Applications for the 2025-26 academic year are now open and will be accepted through Tuesday, April 15. Interested students can apply online for the scholarship.
To be eligible, students must:
- Be currently enrolled in or applying to the M.A. in Communication Studies or the M.A. in English and Writing Studies program, both housed in the College of Arts and Letters.
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.2.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in journalism — especially community-focused or investigative work.
Preference will be given to students who:
- Propose a viable journalism project centered on the Inland Empire;
- Are currently enrolled in, or plan to take, journalism courses at CSUSB;
- Identify as first-generation and/or socioeconomically marginalized students;
- Reside in San Bernardino or Riverside counties.
Fellows will have the option to pursue independent study under faculty mentorship to refine their journalistic craft. In some cases, a fellowship project may fulfill the culminating experience requirement in lieu of a traditional thesis or comprehensive exam.
