Cal State San Bernardino and the Apple Valley Unified School District (AVUSD) have entered into a memorandum of understanding to allow AVUSD students to participate in California State University’s High School University Program (HSUP), which allows qualified students to begin their college education before they graduate from high school.
Qualified AVUSD juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to enroll in college-level classes in partnership with CSUSB, taught by qualified instructors, putting them on the path toward earning a four-year degree. The HSUP classes will begin with the 2025-26 academic year.
HSUP classes will be held at Apple Valley High School and at Granite Hills High School.
"This memorandum of understanding between CSUSB and AVUSD represents a pivotal step in expanding access to higher education for high school juniors and seniors,” said Rafik Mohamed, CSUSB provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “By providing High School University courses, we are creating a seamless pathway for students to experience college-level learning, earn valuable credits and develop the skills needed for academic success. This partnership underscores our commitment to educational equity and student achievement, ensuring that more students have the opportunity to pursue and complete their college degrees."
HSUP students will have the opportunity to experience the academic rigors of college-level classes, following college-level curriculum developed with CSUSB, on a part-time basis, as they take approved courses convenient for their high school schedule during the traditional academic year. Completion of the college courses count toward their college degree.
The High School University Program is only offered for specific preexisting cohorts; CSUSB recently entered an HSUP agreement with the Victor Valley Union High School District. Both were made possible with a grant from the K-16 Collaborative and the Gates Foundation.
Interested students should check with their high school to see if it provides a current cohort or contact HSUP@csusb.edu.
