CSUSB professor speaks against idea of dinosaur fossils auctioned as art pieces

Stuart Sumida, CSUSB professor of biology and president of the Society of Vertebrate Palaeontology (SVP), a leading body on fossil research based in Utah, was quoted in an opinion column the “commodity status” of fossils being auctioned in the art market. Sumida, as SVP president, argued against the idea, that “such transactions can mean removing specimens ‘from the public trust and the scientific community for profit.’”

Brian Levin, founder of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino and chair of the California Civil Rights Department’s Commission on the State of Hate, was quoted in an opinion column about the late anti-immigration activist Glenn Spencer. “What’s frightening now is that hate like his used to be well-segregated from the mainstream,” he said. “Now, the guardrails are off, and what Spencer advocated for is federal policy.”
