Flagstaff Camp and Explore - SBC and PDC

Come with us on this urban adventure to explore one of the great cities of the American Southwest. We will learn about the culture, heritage, and nature of this historical city. Resting right on Route 66, this north-central Arizona settlement is encircled by the Coconino national forest. Surrounded by one of the largest pine forests on earth, Flagstaff features many fascinating attractions such as the Sunset Crater Volcano, Walnut National Monument, and Native American ruins. It is also an astronomical centre, home to the Lowell Observatory (the site of the Pluto discovery) and the meteor crater used as training ground for the astronauts that went to the moon.

Itinerary
Day 1:
We meet at the Adventure Center at 8:00 AM and assist leaders with packing gear. Once everything is loaded, the group will stop at the Palm Desert Campus at 10:00 AM to pick up additional participants. From there, it’s a 6.5-hour drive to Kendrick Cabin just outside Flagstaff, AZ. Upon arrival, we’ll get settled and prepare for the days ahead. The evening will be relaxed—time to unwind, play games, and get a good night’s rest.
Day 2:
Saturday begins with breakfast at 7:00 AM. Afterward, we will prepare lunch for the day before heading out to explore Wupatki National Monument, including nearby Sunset Crater, an area where astronauts once trained for moon missions. We’ll enjoy lunch along the trail while taking in the landscape. Later, we’ll visit Walnut Canyon to see 12th-century Native American cliff dwellings. After a full day of exploration, we’ll return to our cabin for dinner and a well-deserved night of rest.
Day 3:
Sunday starts with breakfast at camp before heading to nearby Lava River Cave, a lave tube where flashlight are needed. We then head into the city and begin with a visit to the Museum of Northern Arizona to learn about the region’s cultural and natural history. After lunch, we’ll explore some of Flagstaff’s highlights, including the Visitors Center, a walking tour of Route 66, and the Historic Downtown District. Participants will have free time to explore shops and local spots. We’ll wrap up the day with dinner in town before returning to our cabin for the night.
Day 4:
We’ll start the morning with a quick breakfast followed by a short hike offering panoramic views of the city. After breaking camp, we’ll begin our return journey home. Along the way, we will stop at Montezuma Castle National Monument to explore the remarkably preserved cliff dwellings of the Sinagua people. After the visit, we’ll continue the 6.5-hour drive back, with dinner on the road.
