Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be the featured speaker at the 12th annual CHINA Town Hall, which will be livestreamed to 100 venues across Greater China and the United States – including Cal State San Bernardino – on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The program will take place beginning at 3 p.m. at the university’s College of Extended & Global Education Yasuda Center, Room 111. Advance registration, which is free, is required, and may be done online at the World Affairs Council Inland Southern California CHINA Town Hall-U.S. China Relations in 2018 webpage. Parking at CSUSB is $6. The two-part event will feature an interactive webcast discussion and question-and-answer session with Rice on the complex Sino-American relationship. The program is sponsored nationally by the National Committee on U.S. China Relations, and the CSUSB event is sponsored by the World Affairs Council Inland Southern California, CSUSB’s Modern China Lecture Series, the CSUSB History Club/Phi Alpha Theta, the CSUSB Department of History, the Center for Global Management, the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration, and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Immediately following the webcast, globally recognized China specialist Minxin Pei will talk to the audience at CSUSB about the recent changes he has seen in Chinese trade and foreign policy and how this will impact relations between the countries. For those who could not arrive at 3 p.m., the Rice presentation will be shown again at 5 p.m. China’s emergence as a global power, its role as a major trade partner amid recent frictions, and its potential as a collaborator on key U.S. global policy initiatives ensure that U.S.-China relations will affect the lives of all Americans. CHINA Town Hall will help audiences around the country understand the challenges and opportunities of what has been characterized as the most important bilateral relationship of the 21st century. Rice served as the 66th Secretary of State of the United States, the second woman and first African-American woman to hold the post. She also served as President George W. Bush’s Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (national security adviser) from January 2001 to 2005, the first woman to hold the position. Rice is currently the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution, and professor of political science at Stanford University. She is also a founding partner of RiceHadleyGates, LLC. Pei is Tom and Margot Pritzker Professor of Government and director of the Keck Center on Strategic Studies at Claremont McKenna College. He has been named the inaugural Library of Congress Chair in U.S.-China Relations. Pei will begin an eight-month residency at the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress beginning in January 2019.
