Economist Tom Pierce will discuss to national and regional outlook at the Highland Area Chamber of Commerce’s quarterly breakfast meeting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Immanuel Baptist Church.
Pierce is professor emeritus at the Department of Economics at California State University, San Bernardino. He has been studying the national U.S. economy for more than 40 years. He has served as a dean and the university and has taught economic and other business-related courses. He earned his doctoral degree from Notre Dame University.

CSUSB production of ‘Frankenstein’ opens this weekendRedlands Daily FactsMarch 7, 2018
Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” adapted and directed by Cal State San Bernardino professor Tom Provenzano, will open this weekend at the university, the newspaper reported in a column of weekend entertainment events.
Provenzano’s fresh perspective on the life of Dr. Victor Frankenstein is a story not about a mindless beast, but of a creation longing for acceptance and companionship. Performances continue at 8 p.m. March 15, 16 and 17 and 2 p.m. March 18.

The use of the word ‘globalist’ by far right discussed by CSUSB professorThe Washington PostMarch 9, 2018
An article following the resignation of White House economic adviser Gary Cohn following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum focused on the “globalist” label he was tagged with. The term is arguably an anti-Semitic dog whistle, recently made popular by far-right media outlets such as Breitbart News, and the Post used a quote from CSUSB criminal justice professor Brian Levin to put the use of “globalism” into perspective.
“Anti-globalism is a very efficient net to unite disparate parts of the right,” Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, said to the New York Times in 2016. Globalism is “the defining folklore and narrative for the racist right,” he added, and it has become a “convenient boogeyman to explain the various declines that the United States is perceived to be in.”
The term harks back to days when some in Europe spoke of Jews as “rootless cosmopolitans” and enemies of the national interest. The Post reported. Nevertheless, Trump’s embrace of such messaging has played out well among his populist base.
