Trump administration deserves credit for announced release of Ethiopian political prisoners, CSUSB professor saysThe HillJan. 5, 2018
Alemayehu (Al) Mariam, professor of political science at CSUSB, a constitutional lawyer and senior editor of the International Journal of Ethiopian Studies, wrote in an opinion piece: “President Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson deserve full credit for promoting human rights and aid accountability in Ethiopia and Africa in general.
“There are many unanswered questions about the announced release of political prisoners in Ethiopia. Is the announcement a public relations stunt? Will there be a blanket amnesty, or only selective release? Is the regime trying to buy time to prolong its rule by making empty promises? Will the regime create bureaucratic snafus and drag its feet in releasing political prisoners? Could the regime use political prisoners as “hostages” to extract concessions from the opposition? Could the announcement be a genuine gesture aimed at reconciliation and pull the country back from the precipice of civil war? Is the announcement too little, too late as the country slowly slips into a creeping civil war?”

CSUSB education professor one of three guest speakers at Youth Action Project’s ‘YAP TALKS’VoiceJan. 4, 2018
Wil Greer, community leader and assistant professor of education at Cal State San Bernardino, will be one of the featured speakers at the Youth Action Project’s YAP TALKS event on Jan. 13 in San Bernardino.
Greer and two other speakers will deliver 20-minutes speeches that incorporate the philosophies and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to current issues experienced by San Bernardino community members and its youth.
The event will also feature student-led entertainment and a basketball tournament between the SBCUSD Police Department and students from Pacific, San Gorgonio, Arroyo Valley, and San Bernardino high schools.

The index for Inland area manufacturing fell nearly four points in December but remained above the 50 percent benchmark for growth — the 12th consecutive month in which the lead number indicated expansion.
“The Inland Empire manufacturing sector and the overall local economy remain comfortably in growth mode,” Barbara Sirotnik, director of the Cal State San Bernardino-based Institute of Applied Research, said in a statement.
The lower December index of 51.0, down from November’s 54.7, was typical for the month when some companies close during the holidays, Sirotnik noted. “And it is encouraging that the figure is much higher than the indices for December 2016 (47.4) and December 2015 (42.1).”
