CSUSB professor emeritus chronicles road to peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea

Alemayehu G. Mariam, CSUSB professor emeritus of political science, wrote: “I congratulate H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and H.E. President Isaias Afeworki for creating peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea and ending a 20-year no-peace, no-war situation between their countries.
“The fast pace of peace began in June 2018.
“PM Abiy made a surprise game-changing announcement that Ethiopia will comply fully with the Ethio-Eritrea Boundary Commission’s Decision.”
Abiy was recently awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

CSUSB professor comments on Iranian president’s latest news conference

David Yaghoubian, CSUSB professor of history, was interviewed for a segment that focused on Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s recent news conference where, among addressing other topics, he said resolution of the Yemen crisis is a key to ending regional problems, including the stand-off between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Yaghoubian, who appears beginning at about 2 minutes and 40 seconds into the segment, said, in general, “I felt that President Rouhani’s comments demonstrated great confidence and pragmatism, and really he was very relaxed, which I think points to the truth of his commentary regarding the fact that Iran seems to have survived the really intensive 18-month period of the maximum pressure campaign and all of the various shenanigans, including American military activity in the Persian Gulf, and has continued to work through its own resilience and pragmatism to build up its economy to the point that President Rouhani could make several different positive observations regarding the position of the Iranian economy relative to where it has been over the past 18 months.”
The Trump administration more than a year ago pulled the U.S. out of the multinational agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), to regulate Iran’s nuclear program, and reinstated economic sanctions in an effort to renegotiate for what it called a stronger the agreement. Other signatory nations, however, did not follow the U.S.
