CSUSB professor quoted in article about a planned church expansion in Lake Arrowhead
The Desert Sun
Feb. 28, 2020
Jennifer Alford, an assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at California State University San Bernardino, was quoted in an article about plans by a Lake Arrowhead church to expand its campus. The plans, which were approved Jan. 23 by the San Bernardino County Planning Commission, have run up against opposition from some community members and environmental groups.
The newspaper reported that Alford emailed county staff in January to warn them of potential downstream water quality impacts to Lake Arrowhead, one of the area's drinking water sources.
She wrote that, even without the proposed campus, a research team funded by the university system observed temporary spikes in nutrient and bacteria levels in the area's creeks, meaning human activities are already influencing water resources.
'The location, landscape and hydrological alterations of the proposed [Church of the Woods] project, by design, will create adverse impacts to water resources,' Alford wrote.
From the church's perspective, said Patrick Hopkins, a member of the congregation and a contractor who is acting as the project manager, water quality impacts were thoroughly dealt with in the permitting process, and mitigation measures were planned to limit any pollution. Church of the Woods also sold a 10-acre section of forest to the county's flood control district to decrease runoff and assist with an adjacent drainage project.
