CSUSB Cybersecurity Center to host virtual national cybersecurity symposium

Cal State San Bernardino’s Cybersecurity Center will host the annual Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cybersecurity Symposium this year to be held virtually Nov. 19-20.
The CAE in Cybersecurity Symposium will focus on research and cybersecurity education from the CAE in the cybersecurity community. The symposium also serves as a platform for fostering intercampus relationships and promotes networking and collaboration.
“This is the fifth year of this annual event and it is always an amazing experience to gather hundreds of cybersecurity faculty with the common purpose of building a strong cybersecurity workforce for the nation,” said Tony Coulson, executive director of the CSUSB Cybersecurity Center and lead for the newly designated Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE) National Center for Cybersecurity Education.
This two-day symposium encompasses all 330+ existing Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD), Centers of Academic Excellence in Research (CAE-R), and Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations (CAE-CO), as well as government representatives and invitees.
The symposium is supported in partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education and the National Security Agency.
Under Coulson’s leadership, the CSUSB Cybersecurity Center was recently named the Community National Center for Cybersecurity Education by the NSA, which selected the center for a $10.5 million grant and the university to be a leader of the agency’s core workforce development initiative, the CAE in Cybersecurity Community. In its designation as a national center, the CSUSB Cybersecurity Center will establish and manage three Centers of Academic Excellence-C Communities of Practice, coordinate cutting-edge research, establish and support five regional hubs around the country, and support cybersecurity education nationally.

CSUSB professor discusses Facebook ban of suspected extremist accounts

Facebook this week banned the founder and administrator of the Defend East County Facebook group after he wrote, “Lock and load ... prepare for war” in a post the morning of Election Day. Supporters of such groups are calling Facebook’s actions censorship, while experts researching extremist groups are applauding.
Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University San Bernardino, said Facebook’s bans are pivotal to curtailing the spread of extremism.
Influencers and groups, once de-platformed, often attempt to migrate to more fringe, less-popular social media sites, Levin said. They still usually lose their large followings, as only the most dedicated follow them.
“Research has demonstrated, when rumor, hatred and calls to immediate violence are de-platformed off of mass, communal online meeting places it has an immediate deleterious effect on continuing growth,” he said. “It does not excise the cancer, but it does prevent the cancer from metastasizing.”

Extremism experts, including CSUSB’s Brian Levin, warn of dangers in baseless claims of 'stolen' election

Right-wing activists pushing baseless claims that the presidential election was "stolen" mobilized in several cities over the weekend, drawing people to the streets through networks forged during summertime protests against lockdowns.
"Extremism is a carnival-mirror reflection of conflicts and divisions in the mainstream," said Brian Levin, a hate-crime researcher at California State University, San Bernardino.

Cousins named top CSUSB professor

Kim Cousins, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Cal State San Bernardino, has been named outstanding professor for the 2019-20 academic year, the university’s highest honor.
An instructor at Cal State San Bernardino since 1991, Cousins was also named John M. Pfau Endowed Professor, named for the university’s founder.
