The Modern China Lecture Series will host two talks today, Monday, March 1, and Tuesday, March 2, both on Zoom.
Hong Kong-based journalist Ryan Ho Kirkpatrick will speak at 5:30 p.m. today “‘True Masters:’ Total Security and Colonial Continuities in Hong Kong Under the NSL,” which hill focus on the current situation in Hong Kong.
Author Rana Mitter will speak at 10 a.m. Tuesday on “China’s Good War: How World War II Is Shaping a New Nationalism,” which is the title of his latest book.
Both events are open to the public, and can be accessed from a PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android at https://csusb.zoom.us/j/388207496.
Kilpatrick is an award-winning journalist and scholar from Hong Kong who has reported on the city’s politics, protests, and policing for The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, TIME, and others.
His talk will focus on Beijing’s imposition of the National Security Law last summer, which marked a dark new point of departure for Hong Kong — the muzzling of what had been one of Asia’s most boisterous and defiant polities. But it was also a point of continuity for a city that has never truly escaped colonialism, where promises of democratic self-rule have been made and broken for generations when they threatened to defy London or Beijing.
Mitter is the author of several books, including “Forgotten Ally: China’s World War II, 1937–1945,” named a Book of the Year in The Economist and Financial Times. He has commented on Asia for the BBC, CNN, NPR, the New York Times, the History Channel, and the World Economic Conference at Davos. The professor of the History and Politics of Modern China at the University of Oxford, Mitter is also a Fellow of the British Academy and an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
His presentation on his book, “China’s Good War,” in which he “argues that China’s reassessment of the World War II years is central to its newfound confidence abroad and to mounting nationalism at home,” according to the website of the book’s publisher.
Also, upcoming on April 15 will be a presentation by James M. Hargett, professor of Chinese at the State University of New York, Albany. He will speak on “Jade Mountains and & Cinnabar Pools: The History of Travel Literature in Imperial China.”
The Modern China Lecture Series was initiated to promote awareness of important issues related to China for those on the CSUSB campus and in the community. In the series of more than 50 lectures, workshops, film screenings and roundtable forums since January 2014, China scholars from UC San Diego, UC Riverside, the Claremont Colleges, UCLA, USC, UC Irvine and other institutions have visited the CSUSB campus to share their expertise and opinions.
Speakers in the series have included specialists in history, economics, political science, philosophy, finance, security studies, literature, anthropology and other fields.
The series cosponsors this year are the CSUSB Department of History, the History Club/Phi Alpha Theta, and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
