Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus is partnering with OneFuture Coachella Valley to administer scholarships to nursing students at the university, thanks to a generous donation from local philanthropists, Mary Caldwell and Steve Weiss.

Scholarships of up to $1,000 each will be awarded to nursing students at the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus who participate in the university’s Nursing Street Medicine program, which provides free healthcare services to homeless, unsheltered and vulnerable people in the Coachella Valley.

The program is coordinated by Diane Vines, a faculty member in the CSUSB Department of Nursing, College of Natural Sciences, and includes a number of collaborative partnerships with local agencies. Nursing students offer healthcare services while fulfilling clinical hours and service-learning requirements to complete their degrees.

“We are so grateful to our donors, Mary Caldwell and Steve Weiss, for their generosity in providing scholarships that will reward nursing students who volunteer their time with the Nursing Street Medicine program,” said Vines.

“CSUSB’s Nursing Street Medicine program is partnering with OneFuture Coachella Valley to support scholarships for nursing students, and OneFuture is committed to producing a high-quality healthcare workforce from within our local student population,” said Paul Olson, director of development at OneFuture. “As part of the scholarship program, OneFuture provides holistic student services to ensure students have the skills, support and networking opportunities that ensure their success in college. OneFuture scholars graduate at a higher level than their peers because they have this support during their educational journey. Investing in their future builds a competent healthcare workforce for our community.”

“We’re so proud of the great work that our CSUSB Palm Desert Campus nursing students have done in the Nursing Street Medicine program,” said Weiss. “We strongly believe that education is the key to future success and will benefit students, their families and our community. It is our privilege to help advance our students’ educational goals by providing scholarship support.”
