UCancellation: A new mobile measure of selective attention and concentration

Jason F. Reimer, professor of psychology, co-wrote a paper on “a self-administrable, mobile-based test called ‘UCancellation’ (University of California Cancellation), which was designed to assess selective attention and concentration and has two stimulus sets: Letters and Pictures. UCancellation takes less than 7 minutes to complete, is automatically scored, has multiple forms to allow repeated testing, and is compatible with a variety of iOS and Android devices. Here we report the results of a study that examined parallel-test reliability and convergent validity of UCancellation in a sample of 104 college students.

CSUSB: Book reading about autism inclusion set for Feb. 2

Jess Block Nerren, Cal State San Bernardino alumna and lecturer of communication studies, and her team of contributors, will host a reading of their new book, “Rethinking Perception and Centering the Voices of Unique Individuals: Reframing Autism Inclusion in Praxis,” on Zoom, Thursday, Feb. 2, at 4 p.m.

The book, which was released in late September by IGI Global publishing, explores the scholarly research related to autism inclusion, disability inclusion, disability studies, communication, critical scholarship, education, education reform and educational leadership.

The book includes multidisciplinary researchers and practitioners, many of whom are affiliated with CSUSB. The authors will read an excerpt of their chapters during the February event. Along with Nerren, the CSUSB faculty authors are:

  • Becky Sumbera, Ed.D., CSUSB, assistant dean, James R. Watson and Judy Rodriguez Watson College of Education
  • Shannon Sparks, Ph.D., CSUSB, associate professor of education
  • J. Chad Sweeney, Ph.D., CSUSB, professor of English.

CSUSB: 'Strange World' marks biology professor's 70th film as a consultant

Disney’s newest film, “Strange World,” takes viewers into an uncharted, treacherous landscape, and helping the audience get there took the work of dedicated filmmakers, production team members and animators. And helping them get there were consultants – experts in their fields to help make the movie believable.

One of those consultants, Cal State San Bernardino professor Stuart Sumida, used his extensive knowledge and background in anatomy and paleontology to help the animators and production team make the characters both realistic and fantastic at the same time.
