Cal State San Bernardino and the Coachella Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District are collaborating to offer a free, three-week training course from July 24-Aug. 10 on mosquito surveillance, identification and control. The training is funded by a grant from Pacific Southwest Regional Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases.

The training, which will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday and consist of lectures and laboratory work, will take place at CSUSB through the university’s Department of Health Science & Human Ecology, with field training off campus led by the Coachella Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District.

The training is aimed at CSUSB STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students who are interested in careers in vector control, giving them some of the skills they would need to pursue jobs with vector control agencies once they graduate. Outcomes of the training include:

  • An understanding of vectors, vector-borne diseases, and surveillance and control techniques
  • Learning about career opportunities in vector control
  • Practical experience and fieldwork
  • Gaining knowledge and skills associated with mosquito identification down to the species level, as well as mosquito surveillance and control techniques in the field

Seats are limited; students can apply online at “Mosquito Surveillance, Identification and Control Training.”
