Brenda Angel, a proud alumna of Cal State San Bernardino, is making waves as an artist in her hometown of San Bernardino. Since graduating in 2018 with a degree in graphic design and marketing from CSUSB’s College of Arts and Letters, she has transformed her passion for art into a vehicle for community engagement and storytelling.
Angel's journey to becoming a muralist began with a love for creativity that was nurtured from a young age. “I’ve always expressed myself through art,” she said. “It felt freeing, a way to connect with myself and the world around me.”
Encouraged by her high school art classes, Angel pursued her associate degree in graphic design before transferring to CSUSB to further refine her craft. While at CSUSB, Angel discovered her unique blend of artistry and an aptitude for technology. “Graphic design fascinated me because it combined traditional art with constantly evolving technology. Learning programs like Photoshop and experimenting with 3D design opened up a world of possibilities,” she said.
Angel credits her time at CSUSB for equipping her with the skills and confidence to pursue her dreams. "I always say that my education helped me to be where I am today,” she said. “Every course and class prepared me to be the artist I am today. I found a lot of value in my education. I’m grateful that I was able to attend CSUSB. Now I’m able to continue a career in art because of the education I received.”
One particularly impactful course challenged her to design product packaging, an experience she initially approached with trepidation but completed with pride. “The professor even kept my final project as an example for future students. That moment solidified my belief in my abilities,” she said.
After graduation, Angel immersed herself in San Bernardino’s vibrant art community, connecting with fellow artists and discovering opportunities to share her work. “My first mural was for a community pantry, and from there, the doors kept opening,” she recalled.
Angel’s work gained recognition, leading to collaborations across the Inland Empire, including projects with Omnitrans and Creative Grounds.
Her latest project, featured in the San Bernardino Sun on July 31, exemplifies her dedication to creating meaningful public art. Titled “Resilience,” this mural at the Encanto Community Center in San Bernardino celebrates the healthcare workers and communities that endured the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The mural, funded by a Creative Corps Inland SoCal grant, is part of San Bernardino’s Beautification and Cultural Infusion Project.
Angel drew inspiration from the shared struggles and strength of healthcare professionals and the community during the pandemic. The piece features three core elements: a brain for mental health, a heart for spiritual health, and a skeletal hand representing physical health. These elements are intertwined with vibrant characters symbolizing healthcare workers and the broader community.
Angel hopes the mural serves as a source of hope and reflection. “I want people to see how resilient they’ve been, not just during the pandemic but in facing life’s challenges. I hope it reminds them that overcoming difficulties is possible.”
Looking ahead, Angel dreams of taking her artistry beyond borders, creating murals in other countries and connecting with diverse communities. “I want to start traveling. I want to share people’s stories not just here in my community, but around the world," she said.
Angel’s advice to aspiring artists is rooted in her own experience: “The art community is incredibly supportive. There are resources and people willing to guide you — you just have to reach out. There are always people out there who are willing to help.”
