Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor Award
California State University, San Bernardino has various professional academic advisors across the campuses of San Bernardino and Palm Desert. The Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor Award recognizes the exceptional work that academic advisors do daily through their guidance and mentoring of CSUSB students.

Award description
The Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor Award recognizes a professional academic advisor (non-faculty, non-peer advisor) who has demonstrated the qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students through NACADA’s Core Values of Academic Advising (Caring, Commitment, Empowerment, Inclusivity, Integrity, Professionalism, Respect). Academic advisors also include EOP Counselors, SAIL Counselors, and STEM Counselors.
Eligibility
Nominee must be a current professional academic advisor (non-faculty) employed by California State University, San Bernardino with 50% or more of their responsibilities dedicated to academic advising.
The Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor award is sponsored by Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising (ASUA). Award winner is selected by the University Committee coordinated by the ASUA Academic Advising Office.
Criteria
The Selection Committee is made up of CSUSB academic advisors, previous CSUSB Faculty Advisor Award winners, and staff from CSUSB departments related to academic advising. Selection Committee members are not eligible for the Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor Award.
*Nominations will be evaluated for evidence of demonstrated effective academic advising qualities and practices associated with:
- Caring - Responds to and is accessible to others in ways that challenge, support, nurture, and teach. Advisor builds relationships through empathetic listening and compassion.
- Commitment - Values and is dedicated to excellence in all dimensions of student success.
- Empowerment - Motivates, encourages, and supports students and the greater educational community to recognize their potential, meet challenges, and respect individuality.
- Inclusivity - Respects, engage, and value a supportive culture for diverse populations. Advisor strives to create and support environments that consider the needs and perspectives of students through openness, acceptance, and equity.
- Integrity - Acts intentionally in accordance with ethical and professional behavior developed through reflective practice. Advisor values honesty, transparency, and accountability to the student, institution, and the advising profession.
- Professionalism - Acts in accordance with the values of the profession of advising for the greater good of students.
- Respect - Honors the inherent value of all students. Advisor builds positive relationships by understanding and appreciating students’ views and cultures, maintaining a student centered approach and mindset, and treating students with sensitivity and fairness.

Nomination Procedures
CSUSB students can submit a nomination through the online Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor Nomination form.
Students are encouraged to submit a nomination word count between 300-500 words, describing why they are nominating the academic advisor (non-faculty) and what way(s) has the nominee demonstrated effective academic advising that are associated with NACADA's core values (Caring, Commitment, Empowerment, Inclusivity, Integrity, Professionalism, Respect)?
