Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)
The purpose of Global Accessibility Awareness Day is to raise awareness about the importance of accessibility in digital content creation. As students, faculty, and staff at CSUSB, each of us play an important role in ensuring that our documents, web pages, videos, and IT purchases consider accessibility so that all individuals can achieve equal access to information. GAAD is held annually on the third Thursday in May. This year, GAAD was on May 19th.
Here are some things you can do to help contribute to a more accessibility-conscious CSUSB:
- Use easy-to-read fonts, font sizes, and font colors
- Check for good color contrast
- Use the built-in accessibility checkers in software and web applications used for content creation
- Use headings in documents
- Add alternative text to images that enhance content
- When sending emails, add information in plain text below informational images/flyers
- Caption your videos, or send them to ATS for captioning
- Create a transcript for audio content such as podcasts
- Verify web content using the WAVE toolbar
- Use link text that is meaningful and gives an idea of where the link leads.
- When purchasing ICT, check for the vendor's accessibility statement and/or documentation
