Two CSUSB economics professors push back on use of their research by economists opposed to raising Pennsylvania’s minimum wage Pennsylvania Capital-StarFeb. 20, 2019 Two economics professors from CSUSB have pushed back on the use of their research by economists opposed to raising Pennsylvania’s minimum wage during a state House hearing two weeks ago. During a Feb. 6 hearing by the House Labor & Industry Committee, Susquehanna University Business School Dean Matthew Rousu cited a 2016 paper from Daniel MacDonald and Eric Nilsson, of California State University, San Bernardino, to claim that increasing the state minimum wage from the current $7.25 an hour, to $12 an hour, would increase consumer prices by 2.36 percent. In the memo, which was published by the Michigan-based W.E. Upjohn Institute For Employment Research, MacDonald and Nilsson say that statistic is incorrect and relies upon false assumptions. Read the complete article at “Pa., California economists duel over minimum wage hike’s impact on consumers.” Read MacDonald’s and Nilsson’s rebuttal at “Authors respond to characterization of minimum wage research.”
CSUSB professor interviewed about ongoing turmoil in Venezuela Press TVFeb. 19, 2019 Press TV interviewed David Yaghoubian, a professor of history at CSU San Bernardino, for a segment on the ongoing turmoil in Venezuela. The Trump administration, as have some U.S. allies, has thrown its support behind opposition leader Juan Guaido, who argues that incumbent Nicolas Maduro's election to the presidency last year was illegitimate, claims that a vacuum of power exists and that he has a constitutional mandate to fill it. Meanwhile incumbent Maduro categorized Donald Trump’s comments as Nazi-style when the U.S. president said the Venezuelan military should switch allegiance to Guaido or “lose everything.” Maduro said Trump is in no position to deliver orders to the Venezuelan army.Of Trump’s comments, Yaghoubian said, “It’s a rather Orwellian choice, if you will, to suggest that members of the Venezuelan civil service or military should choose between what Trump is calling democracy, which would be the implantation of a CIA stooge as president, a self-proclaimed president, or to completely lose their freedom, and their assets, and their future. And he really didn’t mince words about that.” See the complete segment at “Trump tells Venezuela military to back Guaido or 'lose everything.'” Yaghoubian appears at 6 minutes and 10 seconds into the segment. Press TV is a 24-hour English language news and documentary network affiliated with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.
