Chino weighs in on affordable housing ‘incentives’

Daniel MacDonald, a professor and chairman of the economics department at Cal State San Bernardino, was quoted in an article about the Chino City Council’s debate over that city’s affordable housing rules and amenities such developments are required to offer. MacDonald said low-income families need a place to live. “Access to amenities is important but the major factor that determines quality of life is the cost of living,” he said. “On that measure, affordable housing is very important and absolutely needed in the community, even if standards are loosened.”

Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, wrote in an opinion column about the extremist group, the Proud Boys. Some of its members are facing federal charges in their alleged role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The Proud Boys is one of several right-wing groups that gained cultural prominence during the Trump era, with its hallmark displays of aggression (both online and in public) on behalf of Euro-nationalism, promotion of MAGA-oriented alliances and opposition to civil rights for minority groups.
Producing ethical water: Anti-mining activism and conflicts over municipal water provisioning in Cuenca, Ecuador

Teresa A. Velásquez (anthropology) wrote, “When gold deposits were confirmed in a community watershed in 2005, water became a politically charged arena for anti-mining activism. This article follows the outcomes of a 2014 Ecuadorian water law on conflicts over water provisioning.”
Utilizing Cognitive Training to Improve Working Memory, Attention, and Impulsivity in School-Aged Children with ADHD and SLD

CSUSB faculty members Lisa Looney (psychology) and Eugene Wong (child development) were among the researchers who published a study that “aimed to examine the effectiveness of cognitive training (conducted in a clinical setting) for students diagnosed with ADHD and specific learning disorder (SLD). Using paired-samples t-tests and a psychometric network modeling technique, results from data obtained from a sample of 43 school-aged children showed (1) that attention and working memory improved following cognitive training and (2) that cognitive training might be related to cognitive structural changes found pre- to post-training among the variables being measured. Implications for clinical practice and school-based interventions are discussed.”
