Coachella Valley schools should work to prevent shootings with safety 'self-assessments'

Thomas McWeeney, director of the Research Institute for Public Management and Governance at CSUSB’s Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration, co-wrote an op-ed column that called for a more comprehensive approach in keeping school sites safe.

“We as experts studying this field have consistently maintained that judgments about the weaknesses in school conditions and circumstances, policies and practices, are best made by the teachers, administrators and staff who work at the individual schools – not teams of specialists or consultants,” McWeeney and his co-authors wrote.

CSUSB’s Brian Levin comments on Texas setting new hate crimes record

Brian Levin, director of CSUSB’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, was interviewed for an article about newly released data collected from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) that shows hate crimes in Texas increased by 6.4 percent from 2021 to 2022, marking the sixth year in a row the state has seen an increase in hate crimes—and setting a new record.

Levin said that the rate of hate crimes in Texas has historically been undercounted, even if the state has steadily improved how comprehensively hate crimes are reported. He also noted that Democratic-leaning states tend to report hate crimes more consistently. 

“Kudos to Texas for improving their data collection and presentation,” Levin said. “But the downside is all the counties that report zero or don’t report at all, and how a city like Austin is reporting more hate crimes than a larger city like Dallas.”

Regardless of the gaps and discrepancies in data, Levin says, “Texas is certainly hitting a new record in terms of hate crimes.” Between 2012 and 2022, Texas saw a 223 percent increase in hate crimes across the state, according to DPS data.

2 Cal State San Bernardino teams win awards in startup launch competition

Two student teams from the School of Entrepreneurship of the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration at Cal State San Bernardino recently placed first in the Product Track 1 and Product Track 2 categories at the Sunstone CSU Startup Launch Competition hosted by San Jose State University. Each team received $25,000 in prize money provided by Sunstone Management.

“Congratulations to the student teams,” Anna Long, assistant professor at the School of Entrepreneurship and the instructor for the technology commercialization class, said in the news release. “They all worked developing their products and companies in the past year, and preparing for the competition. We are very proud of their success and look forward to great things from these entrepreneurs.”
