Cal State San Bernardino alumnus Mark Araujo-Levinson ’22 takes back what belongs to indigenous society as he is dedicated to preserving indigenous languages. After overcoming bullying and depression, Mark vowed to accomplish his goals of teaching, learning and preservation.
Mark is able to converse in 13 languages, including Serrano and other native dialects. He currently teaches Serrano language classes to preschool through 8th grade students, first acquiring the language from his mentor and long-time friend of CSUSB, Tribal Elder Ernest Siva of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians.
Motivated by his students, mentor and loved ones, Mark strives to pursue his other passion in mathematics, working to earn a doctorate and eventually become a professor. However, no matter where he is in the world, Mark says he will continue his passion to preserve indigenous languages.
