Mahmood Nikbakhtzadeh, assistant professor of environmental health science, has been appointed to the California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s (DPR) Sustainable Pest Management Advisory Committee.
Nikbakhtzadeh is one of 18 members selected for the newly formed committee, which brings together scientists, public health experts and agricultural leaders from across the state. The committee will play a key role in supporting California’s efforts to evaluate and reduce pesticide-related risks while advancing sustainable pest management practices.
According to DPR, the advisory committee will help guide the state’s transition toward making sustainable pest management the standard approach in California. Members will provide recommendations on policies, partnerships and strategies that align with the department’s 2024-28 strategic goals.
The committee’s work will include tracking statewide progress, developing pilot projects, reviewing pesticide use data, and promoting innovative pest control alternatives. Its meetings will be open to the public, ensuring transparency and community engagement in shaping future policies.
Karen Morrison, DPR director, emphasized the importance of the committee’s diverse expertise in informing decisions that protect both public health and the environment. Nikbakhtzadeh’s appointment highlights CSUSB’s continued commitment to addressing critical environmental and public health challenges through research, collaboration and service.
