The future of literature looks promising when CSUSB grad students work with schoolchildrenThe Press-EnterpriseMay 21, 2018
Contributing columnist Cati Porter wrote about the Students and Coyotes Instruction in Poetry and Prose, (SCIPP) project, an innovative approach to bringing creative writing back into the schools. Coyotes refers to the Cal State San Bernardino mascot, since university students help with the classes.
The CSUSB students worked with schoolchildren at the Bryant School of Arts and Innovation in Riverside to produce the book “I’m Not a Fish,” a project in the Inlandia Institute, a literary group in the Inland Empire.
Juan Delegado, a CSUSB English professor and Inlandia’s third literary laureate, was credited with bringing SCIPP. Wrote Porter: When then-Cal State San Bernardino creative writing professor Juan Delgado became Inlandia’s third Literary Laureate, we asked him what kinds of projects he wanted to pursue during his tenure. At the top of his priority list was to bring SCIPP to Riverside.
“Before I met Delgado, he had already been running the program for four years at Salinas Elementary in San Bernardino. He and William Beshears co-founded the program as a partnership between Salinas and the state university. Together they developed a program that gives grad students in a variety of liberal arts disciplines experience teaching children the critical creative literacy skills that we all need be successful humans.”
