Sam Buenrostro, superintendent of the Corona-Norco Unified School District, was honored by the University of La Verne’s LaFetra College of Education as one of three of its inaugural Distinguished Education Doctoral Alumni. Buenrostro earned a doctorate in education from LaFetra in 2012.
On Sept. 28 at the Alumni Center, Cal State San Bernardino hosted the New & Newly Promoted and/or Tenured Faculty Brunch, bringing together faculty and administrators to celebrate newly hired, tenured and promoted faculty members.
David Yaghoubian (history) was interviewed about the growing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, and Alex Vara (lecturer, education) is on the Nov. 5 ballot seeking reelection to his seat on the Redlands Unified School District Board of Trustees.
Thomas Corrigan (media studies) discussed the state of journalism in the Inland Empire, Stacy Ortiz (education) was interviewed about the upcoming LEAD Summit XIII, Brian Levin (criminal justice, emeritus) commented on a UC regents’ decision regarding obtaining non-lethal, military-grade equipment for its campus police, and Meredith Conroy (political science) contributed to an article about the GOP stance on abortion during the 2024 election.
Enrique Murillo Jr. (education) was interviewed about the upcoming LEAD Summit XIII, Sept. 27, at CSUSB, Kathryn Ervin (theatre arts, emerita), president of the League of Women Voters San Bernardino Area, talked about the upcoming Citizen Achievement Awards on Oct. 6, and Brian Levin (criminal justice, emeritus) discussed the political violence and the November presidential election.
In addition to panel presentations on its theme, “El Plan de San Bernardino: Transnationalism, Academic Mobility, and the Reframing of Education,” the summit will feature a morning performance by two-time Grammy Award-winning group, Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, and keynote address by veteran actor, artist, activist and motivational speaker Pepe Serna.
“The doctoral program was amazing,” said Erika Tejeda, CSUSB Ed.D. alumna and principal at Liberty High School in Perris, Calif. “The relationships that I built during the program, the strength that I was able to gather from my peers and my mentors and the instructors.... I learned so much. I love CSUSB, and I’m a Coyote for life!”
Cal State San Bernardino continues to accept undergraduate applications from first-time and upper-division transfer students for spring 2025. The application deadline has been extended to Sept. 20.
“Being bilingual has opened up many doors in both professional and personal settings,” said Rosaura Valenzuela. “It not only has provided me with opportunities to grow as a person, but it also has allowed me to connect with my community on a more personal level and better adapt to their needs.”
